As I continue to draw more frequently by hand (versus using the computer straightaway), I have enjoyed seeing the results I end up with. For this illustration, I had the idea of taking the phrase "expression of love," and turning it into "espresso of love" and immediately thought of two parents fawning over a little espresso.
For this piece, I had two separate illustrations. The first was of the actual scene, and the other was to hand-letter the text (another ongoing project of mine). I then edited in Photoshop and Illustrator, adding a burlap texture (as someone suggested :) ) to continue the coffee theme.
The process, after some practice, becomes easier to do and always produces interesting results. When you mix mediums (in my case, paper scans of illustrations, texture images, and computer tools), you never know exactly what you are going to get at first, but I find that it's usually more visually appealing than solely using one medium.
Have you also had success with using more than one medium? Is there a technique you would recommend?
